Meal Delivery Kits – Sunbasket

Sunbasket is the 4th meal delivery kit I’ve tried. I’ve already tried Hello Fresh, Marley Spoon, and Every Plate.

Sunbasket is by far the healthiest of the meal delivery kits, but it’s also the most expensive. You will easily spend $70-$100 a week for just a few meals. However, it’s very cheap to try it for the first time. You can combine the introductory offer with offers from credit cards and get your first order for about $35. And if you buy it through Rakuten, it’s even cheaper.

I ordered this meal kit, expecting it to be delivered on a Monday, but somehow there were delays, and it didn’t arrive until Wednesday. By then, some of the food was questionably warm, and the ice packs weren’t quite as cold as they should have been. Furthermore, I had improvised several meals that I’d thought would be covered by the meal kit. I’ve never heard of the shipping company Courier Express, and I had been worried that I wouldn’t even receive the order, so I complained (pulled a Karen) and got a credit for my next order.

They offer a lot of ready-made meals. I ordered a couple of my partner’s favorites.
Lemongrass chicken soup: This is one of their “speedy” meal kits, and it is, indeed, speedy. The vegetables arrived diced and sliced, and I didn’t have to do anything complicated to prepare this soup. I had to cook some chicken that’s already stripped, slice up the bok choy, dump it all in a pot, and 15 minutes later, I had soup.

This picture doesn’t give it justice, but it was great. However, my partner is not here right now, and I probably won’t leave him much – the portions are smaller than what you get from other meal plans. You might also need some bread on the side and a dessert to serve two people. However, I know I’m eating healthy food with high-quality ingredients.

This is Baja fish taco bowls with green goddess slaw and tomato salsa. It’s good, but it’s also very low-calorie. This is not much food.
This is a Hiyashi chuka bowl with fresh ramen, egg ribbons, and crispy pancetta. It was the prettiest out of all the meals I made. Ramen is generally pretty filling. However, after we ate these, my partner said, “I’m still hungry,” and he made himself a 20 cent packet of ramen. This dish cost about $26 to make (or it would have been without the discounts), but it wasn’t very much food.

Sunbasket offers way more customizations than other meal plans. The lemongrass soup had options for chicken, tofu, pork, shrimp, scallops, plant-based chicken, even top sirloin. There were 11 different protein options, and it was easy to make it vegan.

Verdict: if you can afford it, you won’t find a healthier meal kit. You will feel good about eating this food. But most people won’t want to spend this much money on a food delivery service. If you’d like to try it, here’s a link: sunbasket.com/invite/Michelle3830638.

Thanks and have a great day!
