I haven’t posted about saving money in a while, but I do think of myself as thrifty (somewhat). Here are some things I do to save money:
- I don’t have many regular bills. I even tried to cancel Sirius XM but they keep giving me discounts!
- My gym membership is cheap. The upgraded membership includes hydro-massage beds, which helps me to lengthen my time between massage/chiropractor appointments.
- I search coupon codes, or go through a site like Rakutan to save money.
- With credit cards I get travel points and cash back. The last few years, I’ve saved about $2,000/yr. on travel.
- When I try new services like Hello Fresh, I use referral codes to save money.
- I don’t eat at restaurants very often.
- Most of the time I bring a lunch to work.
- Recently, I discovered the Trader Joe skincare line. The eye cream is great for just $5.99!
Still, I spend too much money on many things:
- Makeup. There are cheaper options than what I use, but I don’t spend the time researching them.
- Hair care. The shampoo I use costs $20-$40-a-bottle. I also spend a lot for haircuts.
- Skincare. My $5.99 Trader Joe eye cream is sitting next to a $125 night cream.
- I spend a lot over the course of a year on my chiropractor.
- Bike repairs. Some of my friends do their bike repairs themselves, and I would save a lot by consulting with them first.
- Donations. When I sold my house, I lost my tax deduction so I stopped donating to various causes. This year, I am planning to donate small amounts more frequently.
- Beer and wine. At bars, I’m spending money on the experience. A beer at home is a fraction of the cost! By limiting myself to one drink, I can save a lot of money.
- Last year, I got rid of a bunch of clothing. I spent money on a few quality items. My wardrobe isn’t perfect, but it’s better than before: I bought multiple sports bras, regular bras, socks, and pants.
- Finally, vacations. Last year was my most expensive vacation year ever. We went on two cruises! I plan to go on fewer and less-expensive vacations this year.
