One memory from each state:

  • Alabama – I did a fast food tour: Foosackly’s, Whataburger, Crystal’s, Jack’s, and Milo’s.
  • Alaska – I did the Klondike Summit To Sea Bicycle Tour.
  • Arizona – Camping and hiking the Grand Canyon. Hardest hike of my life.
  • Arkansas – I toured a cave near Fayetteville. I also totalled my car in Hope, AR and had to stay for 3 nights.
  • California – I ate a $2 grocery store salad while looking out over Lake Tahoe.
  • Colorado – I spent a night in Cortez when moving from Salt Lake to Raleigh.
  • Connecticut – I ate at Mystic Pizza, and visited an apple cider farm.
  • Delaware – I tasted about 25 different meads at The Brimming Horn Meadery.
  • Florida – I walked through a bad neighborhood.
  • Georgia – I trashed Savannah, GA, along with 2,000+ fellow hash house harriers.
  • Hawaii – I hiked on a volcano and got yelled at by the tour guide for making some Darwin decisions.
  • Idaho – I swam at Lava Hot Springs! I also saw a bear, and there was a great dive bar near the border of Montana where I would go to dance, when I lived in West Yellowstone, Montana.
  • Illinois – As a kid, I went shopping with mom in Chicago.
  • Indiana – I drove through Indiana a lot as a kid. No distinctive memories, except for the smell in Gary, IN.
  • Iowa – I walked through Des Moines. Great city.
  • Kansas – I stayed overnight in a modular home 10 miles from the world’s largest ball of twine!
  • Kentucky – I drove through Kentucky a lot. No distinct memories.
  • Louisiana – I saw live Blues music and bought makeup from a street fair in New Orleans.
  • Maine – Popovers! And biking in Acadia National Park near Bar Harbor.
  • Maryland – I went mountain climbing on a cliff and swore loudly.
  • Massachusetts – I went to Kripalu for a yoga retreat.
  • Michigan – I staffed a conference for Michigan family physicians in Traverse City, MI.
  • Minnesota – I hiked around a trail/lake in Minneapolis.
  • Mississippi – I drank a beer in a dive bar in Pascagoula. 0 stars, don’t recommend.
  • Missouri – Fourth of July celebration in St. Joseph, MO.
  • Montana – I lived in West Yellowstone for a summer.
  • Nebraska – I went to a Lincoln, NE Friday night artwalk. Lincoln has a great Farmer’s Market.
  • Nevada – Many drunken overnight trips to Wendover, NV.
  • New Hampshire – I walked around the capital, Concord, NH.
  • New Jersey – I visited my grandpa in his senior center.
  • New Mexico – I ate green chili in Albuquerque and saw the movie, “Something’s Gotta Give,” with Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton.
  • New York – I visited the Woodstock touristy sites.
  • North Carolina – I rode in a hot air balloon.
  • North Dakota – I stayed at a strange B&B in Fargo. Basically, it was the basement of a ranch-style house.
  • Ohio – I visited the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.
  • Oklahoma – One very long day of driving.
  • Oregon – I went to an amazing farmer’s market in Eugene, OR.
  • Pennsylvania – I ate Philly cheesesteaks in Philadelphia.
  • Rhode Island – I toured yachts at the International Boat Show.
  • South Carolina – I floated in lazy river pools in Myrtle Beach.
  • South Dakota – I Visited Mount Rushmore at 7 a.m. before the crowds. It was spiritual.
  • Tennessee – I got on Country Music Television’s Most Wanted Live.
  • Texas – I ate a lot of BBQ.
  • Utah – Visiting for a night and staying for 4 years!
  • Vermont – I visited the Ben & Jerries factory and the Cabot Cheese factory.
  • Virginia – I think I got to Pungo, once.
  • Washington – I drove into the state, and then turned around. Got too lazy to drive to Seattle. I need to get back there.
  • West Virginia – Lots of family retreats when I was a kid. They are a blur.
  • Wisconsin – I went to a wedding in Madison.
  • Wyoming – I bought booze in Evanston, WY. It’s a thing, when you live in Utah.
